Boutell's Heraldry : Extract from Boutell's Heraldry (1970) relating
to the practice of feudal differencing to mark alliances between families.
p104-105
The Luterell arms, Or, a bend between six martlets sable (254), were differeced by other families to mark their feudal alliance. Thus the De Furnivals, who held their lands by feudal tenure under the Luterells bore, Argent, a bend between six martlets gules; and families dependent on the De Furnivals further differenced the arms, e.g. De Eccleshall, Sable, a bend between six martlets or; De Wadsley, Argent, on a bend between six martlets gules three escalopes or (255); De Wortley, Argent, on a bend between six martlets gules three bezants (256); De Mounteney, Gules, a bend between six martlets or. The De Mounteneys further differenced their arms for cadency: Sir Ernauf changed the tincture of the field to azure; Sir John bore the same arms with the addition of a molet gules (257); and another Sir John bore, Gules, a bend cotised between six martlets or (258)
