This map shows the distribution of the surname Tonge in South East Lancashire at the time of the census in 1881. Clearly Farnworth and Bolton are the hot spots.
Manchester, Salford and Pendleton have their fair share of Tonges, having been magnets for migrants during the industrial revolution. (Of the 52 Tonges living in Manchester in 1881, only 3 had actually been born there).
Worsley, Barton Upon Irwell and Ashton Under Lyne cover large areas, and are therefore really no more densely populated than their neighbouring townships.
