Chantler Family of Pendleton

Chantlers Buildings, Irlams o'th Height

Chantlers Buildings were seven houses in Irlams o'th Height, an area of Pendelton, in Salford.  The earliest record I have found of them actually referred to as "Chantlers Buildings" is on the 1841 census, although they were probably built earlier than this. I suspect that they were there in the 1780's (see the land tax records below) .  They still existed as late as 1959 (see photograph below).  They no longer exist (in 2014), although there is still a public house called the Red Lion on the site - Chantlers Buildings would have stood where the pub car park is now.  The Red Lion and surrounding area can be seen on Google Maps and Street View.

On the 1841 census, Peter Chantler, a publican, lived a few houses away from Chantlers Buildings.  In 1851 he is described as a "Proprietor of Houses".  Peter's father was Thomas Chantler of Starling, who in his will left property in Radcliffe and Irlam o'th Heights to be split between his ten surviving children.  It is possible that the property in Irlam o'th Heights was Chantlers Houses.

Samuel Chantler, Horse Shoe Inn, Pendleton, 1781 - 1820

Extract from Salford Pubs (Part Three), by Neil Richardson, p16

The Horse Shoe Inn of Board Street was kept by William and Mary Fish from 1774 until 1830, then by Samuel Chantler from 1781 to 1820,  The inn stood on a prominent site at the top of Tanners Lane (later Church Street) and across from Pendleton Church.  A map published in 1831 shows it was a  sizeable property, with a bowling green, stables and other outbuildings. Directories from the 1820s to the 1850s
list it as the Horse Shoe and Bowling Green Inn.

Evidence of Thomas Chantler, son of Samuel Chantler, Horse Shoe Inn, Pendleton, 1817

Manchester Tracts, Volumes 1-15; A correct report of the trial of William Holden, James Ashcroft the Elder, James Ashcroft the Younger, David Ashcroft and John Robinson for the MURDER of Margaret Marsden and Hannah Partington and for the ROBBERY in the dwelling-house of Mr. Thos. Littlewood, at Pendleton. Lancaster Assizes, 5th Sept 1817

p6 - About a mile from the house, nearer to Manchester, and on the side of the road, is a public house known by the sign of the Black Horse; and short distance on the other side of the house, in the village of Pendleton, is another public house called Chantler's, or the Horse Shoe
